What are Wine Master Add-In files?

Wine Master Add-In files are small collections of wines that you can merge into your current wine collection. They work with Wine Master for Palm and Wine Master for Windows. Wine Master 2.0 lets you selectively add wines to your personal wine database. Every wine you add is automatically deleted from the Add-In file. You may also delete individual wines or the entire Add-In file.

The Add-In button [Add-In button] appears when you have Add-In files installed on your Palm device.

The Add-In wines have all the details filled-in for you:

Name (description)
Vintage
Price

Producer
Region
Rating
Detailed tasting notes
[Wine Master detail]
Download, install, and choose the wines you want to add to your personal wine database.

You can import or create your own Add-In files with Wine Master for Windows.

Wine Master Add-In files are enjoyed best with software registration.

Where do I find Add-In Files?

Wine Master Add-In files are available at Wines for Wine Master.

It takes just a few simple steps:
  1. Download one or more Wine Master Add-In files.
  2. Un-zip each file.
  3. Install the .pdb file(s) on your Palm device.
  4. Run Hot-Sync.
  5. Tap the Add-In button in Wine Master to select wines.

Must I register?

You must register Wine Master for Palm and Wine Master for Windows to have more than a few wines. You may be able to add a few wines from the Add-In files, but your total wine count will be limited. If you want to try an Add-In file before registering, download an Add-In file and add-in only 1 or 2 wines, skip the rest.

How do I put the Add-In file into the Palm?

To add new wines to your Wine Master for Palm database using an Add-In file, do the following:
  1. Download the Add-In file.
  2. Un-zip the file.
  3. Install the .pdb file(s) on your Palm device.
  4. Run Hot-Sync.
  5. Tap the Add-In button in Wine Master to select wines.

How can I select wines from Add-In files?

Selecting wines from an Add-In file can be done in either Wine Master for Palm or Wine Master for Windows. Pick one.
Wine Master for Palm
"Add" or "Skip" each wine in an Add-In during the add-in process. Look at the wine name and decide whether or not to Add or Skip the wine. One can also set the category for the wine at that time. (See How can I get the Add-In to go into a category instead of Unfiled?)
Wine Master for Windows
Import each Add-In file (File/Import Wine Master) into a "New" collection. Delete the wines that are not desired. The resulting collection is then exported to a new Add-In (File/Export Wine Master Add-In). The new Add-In file is either (1) imported into the hot-sync collection or (2) installed onto the Palm. Do one but not both.

How can I assemble a collection of Add-In files?

Wine Master for Windows Add-In Collection
To build a collection of only Add-In wines, do the following with Wine Master for Windows:
Create a new, empty collection (File/New). Do not use your hot-sync collection. Merge each Add-In file into the new collection (File/Import Wine Master, select the "Add" choice rather than the "New" choice in the Import Wine Master Add-In dialog.) Delete the wines that are not desired. After you have selected all the wines for the Add-In collection, save it and export it as a Wine Master Add-In file (File/Export Wine Master Add-In). Using the exported Add-In file, either (1) import it into the hot-sync collection or (2) install it onto the Palm. Do one but not both.

How do I create my own Add-In Files?

You can create your own Add-In files as follows:
  1. Create a new file in Wine Master for Windows (File/New).
  2. Enter the new wines into Wine Master for Windows.
  3. Export an Wine Master Add-In file (File/Export Wine Master Add-In).
  4. Install the .pdb file(s) on your Palm device.
  5. Run Hot-Sync.
  6. Tap the Add-In button in Wine Master to select wines.

Are the wines assigned to a category?

The wines are assigned to different categories and are combined into one file.

If a wine is in a category that you already have, it will be assigned to that category. If the wine is in a category that you do not have, it will be assigned to Unfiled. See How can I get the Add-In wine to go into a category instead of Unfiled?

Prior to 2000, each Add-In file was pre-assigned to one category. The category is a part of the file name. For example, 981012Pinot_Noir is in the Pinot Noir category. If you have a category in Wine Master named Pinot Noir, then the wines in that Add-In will be put into that category.

How can I get the Add-In wine to go into a category instead of Unfiled?

If your collection already have a category that is the same as the Add-In wine category, Wine Master will assign the Add-In wine to that category. If not, then you can create the category before or during the Add-In process as follows:
Wine Master for Palm - Before Add-In
  1. Go to the Catalog view.
  2. Tap the category popup in the upper-right corner and choose Edit categories....
  3. Enter the new category name. Tap OK.
Wine Master for Palm - During Add-In
  1. Tap the Add-In button.
  2. Tap Add.
  3. Tap the category popup beneath the wine name and choose Edit categories....
  4. Enter the new category name. Tap OK.
  5. Tap the popup and select the category you just added.
  6. Tap Add to add the wine to the category.
Wine Master for Windows - Before Add-In
  1. Choose the Wine/Categories menu command
  2. Click the New button.
  3. Enter the new category name. Click OK.
Wine Master for Windows - During Add-In
Wine Master for Windows will automatically create the category for you when you do the import. However, if you reach the limit of 15 categories, Wine Master for Windows will put the remaining Add-In wines into the Unfiled category. You can avoid having wines assigned to Unfiled by assigning the categories before you import the Add-In file.

How do I preview or change the Add-In wines or categories before I put them into my collection?

You can preview the Add-In wine categories from the Poohbah Wine Master Add-In Files page. The page contains a "Preview" column with a link to the listing of wines. The category is the first column in the wine preview page. The Wine Master Add-In Files pages are accessible from Wines for Wine Master

You can also preview or change the Add-In wines and categories with Wine Master for Windows. See Can I use Wine Master for Windows to edit the Add-Ins?

How can I separate the French wines from the US wines?

The wines should already be in separate categories. The French wines will be in French regional categories like Red Rhone, Red Burgundy, etc. while the US wines will be in varietal categories like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvig, etc.

Also, when you tap the "Add-In" button on the Wine Master Catalog, you will have the option of assigning wines to different categories or creating new categories. There is more information on this in the Wine Master for Palm User Guide. This is an Acrobat document (.pdf) that you can download from the Poohbah web site .

Duplicates

How can I be sure not to create any duplicates...?

Each review year (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, etc.) has a unique set of reviews. There are no duplicate reviews. If it appears there is a duplicate, it's because it's a review of the same wine for a different vintage year. The only place where you might encounter duplicates is in "Poohbah Special Selections" since these tend to be re-groupings of already published reviews.

Can I use Wine Master for Windows to edit the Add-Ins?

Yes, you can import one or more Add-In files, edit them, and merge them into the hot-sync collection. Here's how it's done:
  1. Start up Wine Master for Windows.
  2. Start with a new, empty collection (File/New)
  3. Import the Add-In file (File/Import Wine Master, select "New" in the dialog)
  4. (Optional) Import additional Add-In files (select "Add" in the dialog)
  5. Edit the collection - delete wines, rename categories, etc.
  6. Export the collection as an Add-In file (File/Export Wine Master Add-In)
  7. Open the hot-sync collection (File/Open hot-sync collection)
  8. Import the Add-In file from step 6 (select "Add" in the dialog).
  9. Save the hot-sync collection (File/Save)
  10. Hot-sync (updates Wine Master for Palm)
This method makes it unnecessary to install any Add-In files onto your handheld. It's done for you when you do the hot-sync.

What is the Region information?

The region information describes the area where the wine is produced. Region Information gives the details.

How big are the Add-In files?

The size of the Add-In files depends on the number of wines. A file with one wine is about 600 bytes. A file with 20 wines is about 4,000 bytes.

How many files and wines can I have in Wine Master?

You can have as many Add-In files as your Palm memory will hold. The Grand Poohbah recommends that you install only a few Add-In files at a time. This makes it easier for you to manage the files. The Add-In files are merged into your Wine Master database (wine collection). You can have only one wine collection on your Palm at at time. Wine Master for Palm has been tested with collections of over 1,000 wines.
