Backup, Restore, and Desktop

I am upgrading my Palm. How can I save and restore my wines?

After you do the Palm upgrade, reinstall the latest version of Wine Master for Palm from the Poohbah download page. Then install the backup Wine Master database. It is the "PbWineDB.pdb" file in your desktop Palm/Users/(user name)/Backups/ folder. You may have to re-enter your registration number.

How can I backup my Wine Master database?

Your Wine Master database is automatically saved on your desktop computer whenever you do a HotSync. It is the "PbWineDB.pdb" file in your desktop Palm/Users/(user name)/Backups/ folder

You can also backup your Wine Master database with Wine Master for Windows.

How can I restore my Wine Master database?

My Wine Master backup database is missing. What happened?

Version 3.2 of the Palm Desktop software does not produce a backup file if you are using the Wine Master Conduit. This is a bug in the Palm Desktop software, not in the Wine Master software. It will be fixed in the next release of the Palm Desktop software (version 3.3)

Displaying and Editing Wines

When I select a category, no wines are listed. Where are they?

There is a feature in Wine Master for Palm OS that lets you display wines depending on their quantity ("qty").
Select a category. When the empty list appears there will be a "Done" button and a "New Wine" button along the bottom of the display. Just to the right of the "New Wine" button are two small bottle icons. The left bottle is empty and the right bottle is full.
If the left bottle is selected [left] , then only wines with a quantity of zero are displayed. These are the wines you need.
If the right bottle is selected [right] , then all wines with a quantity greater than zero are displayed. These are the wines you have.
If both bottles are selected [both] , then all wines are displayed.
Tap the two-bottle icon to change it.
This feature is illustrated in the Wine Master for Palm description.

Wine Master is preset with a selection of wine categories. How can I change them?

You edit the categories to change them.
1. Display the vintage list for a new or existing wine.
2. Tap the category popup (it is under the name popup).
3. Choose "Edit categories"
4. Change the categories.

How can I get a list of wines and wineries together?

The "name" can be anything you want. You can customize the popup list. You can use graffiti to enter any text into the name. For example, you can enter the winery and wine for the name. EG "Mondavi Woodbridge" If you do this for every name, the winery and wine will be in one sorted list.

Another approach is to put the winery in the "name" field and the wine name as the first entry in the "notes" field. This displays a nice list of the wines within the winery.

How do I delete a wine?

You delete a wine by using the Wine menu.
1. Select the wine you want to delete.
2. Tap the "Menu" button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
3. Tap the "Wine" menu.
4. Tap the "Delete Wine" menu item.
5. The wine and all its vintages are deleted.

A new vintage is similar to a previous one. How do I duplicate a vintage and edit that?

You duplicate a vintage by using the "Duplicate Vintage" menu item.
1. Select the vintage you want to duplicate.
2. Tap the "Menu" button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
3. Tap the "Wine" menu.
4. Tap the "Duplicate Vintage" menu item.
5. The vintage is duplicated and the duplicate is displayed.

How do I reorder vintages?

You reorder vintages by moving them to the end of the vintage list.
1. Select the vintage you want to move to the end of the list.
2. Tap the "Menu" button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
3. Tap the "Wine" menu.
4. Tap the "Duplicate vintage" menu item.
5. The vintage is duplicated and placed at the end of the list.
6. Delete the original vintage.

The vintage list is full. How do I add more?

You add more vintages by putting them under a new wine name.
1. Tap the "New Wine" button or the "New Wine" menu item.
2. Enter the name of the wine (duplicate names are okay).
3. Enter the additional vintages.

How do I delete a vintage?

You delete a vintage by using the Wine menu.
1. Select the vintage you want to delete.
2. Tap the "Menu" button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
3. Tap the "Wine" menu.
4. Tap the "Delete Vintage" menu item.
5. The vintage is deleted.

I can enter only 15 items in the producer and region popups. How can I enter more?

The popups are intended as shortcuts for your favorites. You can always enter more producers and regions directly using Grafitti. Tap in the field to the right of the popup and enter text using Grafitti. There is no limit to the number of unique Grafitti entries.

I am limited to 15 categories. How can I enter more?

This is a limitation of the Palm OS. If you have more categories, combine lesser-used categories into more general classifications. For example, white and red Italian wines can be combined into "Italian".

The wine categories in Palm and Windows versions do not match. Why?

If you install Wine Master and a wine database at the same time, the categories in the database may be ignored. The wines will appear in the Unfiled and default categories in Wine Master. To fix this, install and run Wine Master once before you install the wine database.

How can I enter information on wineries separate from the wines?

Winery information is entered with the wine, there is not a separate section for wineries. However, you can create a "Winery" category and enter the winery as a wine. Put the winery information in the "Notes" field.

Entering the Price

Is there a way to sort by price?

Prefix your wine names with a price category. For example, if the name is the wine is "Poohbah Estate Syrah", prefix this with a price code. Let's say our price codes are A - $10 and under, B - $10.01 to 15.00, C - $15.01 to $20.00, D - $20.01 to 30.00, etc. The "Poohbah Estate Syrah" becomes "C: Poohbah Estate Syrah". Your wine list will be sorted by wine name within price category. (Wine Master for Windows 2.0 displays the price in a columnar format and lets you display the wines sorted by price.)

How can I enter a price greater than 650?

The maximum value that can be entered into the price field is 655.35. If your prices tend to be larger than this, enter the price divided them by 10 or 100. For example, enter 754 markkas as 75.4 or 9500 lire as 95.00.

Download and Install

I download Wine Master but it's a scrambled text file? What do I do?

Sounds like your browser downloaded the zip file as if it were a text file. This is not a usable form for the download as you obviously figured out. Right-click the link on the download page and select "save link as" to download the file.

After downloading, find the file named "pbw_xx.zip" (or whatever name you entered in the save dialog). It is somewhere on your computer. Use the "Find" command in your Start menu. You need an unzip utility to unzip (expand) the file into a folder. I use Aladdin Expander for Windows and Aladdin Expander for Mac OS. You can download them for free from Aladdin Systems.

After unzipping pbw_xx.zip, you will have a folder called "pbw_xx". Inside that folder is a file called "pbwine.prc". Install this file with the Palm Desktop software.

I download Wine Master but it says I need xyz [or something else]. What do I do?

You probably need to use an unzip utility to unzip (expand) the download file. Follow the instructions for getting and using an unzip utility in Download Scrambled.

How do I install a Wine Master update?

Use the InstallApp on your desktop computer to install a Wine Master update. Do not delete the old copy of Wine Master on your Palm OS (This will delete your wine database. If you accidentally delete your wine database, you can still restore it).
Install the Wine Master update as follows:
1. Unzip the download.
2. Open the Palm OS Desktop program group and select the Palm OS Install Tool.
3. In the User Name drop-down menu, choose the User Name that corresponds to your Palm OS.
4. Click the Browse button and select the .prc file.
5. Click the Install button.
6. Click the Exit button.
7. Perform a local HotSync operation in the usual manner.
The application that you specified in step 3 will be installed automatically during the course of the HotSync.

Registration

Why should I register?

Registration gives you the following benefits:

How do I register?

You obtain a registration number and enter it into Wine Master.
1. Follow the registration instructions to register.
2. Tap the "Menu" button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
3. Tap the "Options" menu.
4. Tap the "Register" menu item.
5. Enter the registration number.
6. Tap OK.

My registration number has expired. What should I do?

A temporary registration is given to you when you purchase Cigar Master from other distributers. Shortly after purchasing Wine Master you will get a permanent registration number from The Grand Poohbah. Replace the temporary registration number with the permanent one. See How do I register? for instructions on how to enter a registration number.

How many wines can I store?

Each wine takes up from 50 to 500 characters of information, depending on what you enter. Wine Master for Palm has been tested with over 7,000 wines. These are wine labels, you can store up to 8 vintages per label. That makes for over 56,000 unique vintages. The bottle count ("Qty") has no effect on memory usage.

The practical limit is really how many wines you want to scroll through. There are a maximum of 15 categories plus Unfiled. I recommend no more than 200 wines per category for a total of 3000 wines. This is 24,000 vintages and an unlimited number of bottles.

Wine Master performance stays the same no matter how many wines you store. Your hot-sync time will be longer for larger wine collections.

The bottle ranges from empty to full depending on the sum of the quantities for the vintages.
Empty - 0 bottles
One-quarter - 1 bottle
Half - 2 to 5 bottles
Three-quarters - 6 to 11 bottles
Full - 12 or more bottles

I want to display the rating without taping on a vintage. How do I do that?

I want to record and display bin information. How do I do that?

ine Master for Palm includes a 6-character "Bin" field. Enter the bin identification into this field

I don't want to re-enter the producer and region every time I add a vintage. What is an easier method?

Enter the producer and region for the first vintage.
Whenever you need to add another vintage, go to the first vintage and duplicate that.
You duplicate a vintage by using the "Duplicate Vintage" menu item.
Add the new information to the duplicate.

What is a good way to handle wines that I no longer have?

Create a "consumed" category and move each zero quantity wine to that category.
The "consumed" category can be a shopping list for replenishing your collection.
When you purchase the wine, you can move it back to its original category.
